What is Dragon fruit / Pitaya ?
- Dragon fruit, also called pitaya, is the fruit of a Hylocereus cactus. The outside is usually bright red and the inside can be white or bright pink.
- It has become pretty popular recently due to it’s ability to make drinks and foods very bright pink in color and because it is a nutrient-dense food.
- Dragon fruit is said to help boost the immune system, improve metabolism, and aid with digestion.
- It is high in vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds that have been linked to reducing cancer risk.
- The high level of vitamin C helps to boost the immune system. And the high level of fiber helps with digestion. Dragon fruit also contains prebiotics, which promotes the growth of lighter bacteria in your gut.
Recipe ingredients

- frozen mango– this adds a hint of sweetness to the smoothie.
- frozen wild blueberries– we like using wild blueberries instead of regular blueberries because they have more flavor and vitamins. We find ours in the freezer section of Trader Joes.
- frozen strawberries– these are great for texture and flavor.
- dragon fruit powder– our dragon fruit powder is from Ellie’s Best. We've used some of their products before and have always been happy with them. It gives our smoothies a great color in a natural way, and a boost of nutrition.
- orange– we also love adding raw oranges to smoothies because it adds a nice texture change compared to the rest of the frozen fruit.
- almond milk (or any non-dairy milk of your choice)
See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.
