Creamed Peas, Dairy-free option

Creamed Peas, Dairy-free option

A satisfying and cozy creamed peas recipe made by creating a smooth rich sauce from butter, flour, and milk that is seasoned with nutmeg. A dairy-free version of this recipe is provided as well.

This cream peas recipe is a beloved family recipe of ours. It is a Hungarian version of creamed peas that was made by our mother and our grandmother, and now us!

It is made by creating a simple sauce from butter, flour, and milk that is seasoned with nutmeg and lemon juice. Then, canned peas are added to the sauce creating the most comforting and tasty creamed peas dish. We've also provided a dairy-free version of this recipe to this post, which is just as satisfying!

Eat these peas, with some grilled salmon, lighter chicken burgers, or turkey oat meatballs on the side for a complete meal.

Recipe ingredients

Ingredients needed to make creamed peas.
  • Butter– use a good quality butter in this recipe because it helps flavor the sauce.
  • Flour– unbleached all purpose flour works great here.
  • Milk– we like to use regular milk, but feel free to use whatever kind you have on hand.
  • Salt and pepper– this seasons the sauce and enhances the flavors.
  • Nutmeg– this is a key seasoning to the sauce and adds a sweet creaminess to it.
  • Canned peas– we like to use sweat peas, but use whichever peas you prefer.
  • Optional- lemon juice-we like to sprinkle it on top for extra flavor.

Step by step instructions:

The sauce needed to make creamed peas.

Step 1

Step 1: Make the sauce. Add butter to the pan and heat it until it is melted. Or add oil to the pan. Then, add the flour to the butter or oil and mix it with a whisk or fork until it clumps.

Then add milk and whisk the sauce. Season it with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

Step 2: Add peas to the sauce and then serve.

Expert tips

  • When making the sauce, you can easily make the consistency more or less thick. If you need to thicken it, add flour. If you need to thin it out, add more milk.
    • We recommend waiting before taking action because the sauce thickens on its own with time.
  • We prefer only salt, pepper and nutmeg in this sauce. Feel free to add garlic powder, paprika or sugar to change the taste to your liking.
  • Try the peas as they are, but then also try to add a sprinkle of lemon juice to see how you like the flavor.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbs butter, (or olive oil for a dairy-free option)
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 cups milk, (or almond milk for a dairy-free option)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp pepper
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 can peas
  • optional- lemon juice

Method

  1. Add butter to the pan and heat over medium low heat. Once it is melted, add the flour and mix with a whisk or fork until it clumps. Note: if you are using olive oil, just add the flour to it after a few seconds.
  2. Add 1 cup milk or almond milk and then whisk, breaking up clumps as you go. Let the mixture boil and thicken while whisking. Then let it sit for a few minutes. The sauce will be very thick. Then Add another 1 cup of milk or almond milk, whisk, and let it sit. Whisk every so often until sauce reaches desired thickness.
  3. Add salt, pepper and nutmeg and mix.
  4. Turn off heat.
  5. Add 1 can of peas and mix. Season with more salt or nutmeg to taste.
  6. Optional- After serving, sprinkle lemon juice on top. Test this out with a small area to make sure you like it first.
