The week nestled between Christmas and New Year’s often feels like a blissful pause, a time to shed the obligations of daily life and embrace pure vacation mode. For me, this particular week was dedicated to unwinding, enjoying the cherished company of my family, and reflecting on recent adventures. While healthy Paleo and Whole30 recipes will resume their usual spot next week, this moment is reserved for sharing the highlights of a recent, unforgettable journey to Sweden.
Last July, my family and I embarked on a wonderful trip, splitting our time between the vibrant capital of Stockholm and the enchanting island of Gotland. Having visited Stockholm approximately eight years prior, I returned with a list of treasured memories and new aspirations. High on my agenda were indulging in a traditional smörgåsbord, savoring authentic Swedish cinnamon rolls, meandering through the historic streets of Gamla Stan, experiencing a quintessential “fika,” and, of course, a little retail therapy.

Discovering the Enchantment of Gamla Stan
One of Stockholm’s most captivating districts, and undoubtedly a personal favorite, is Gamla Stan – affectionately known as the old town. This colorful, medieval city center, gracefully situated amidst Stockholm’s intricate waterways, is a testament to breathtaking architecture and timeless charm. Its cobblestone streets, narrow alleys, and vibrant facades evoke a sense of stepping back in time, making it an incredibly romantic and inspiring place to wander, explore, and simply absorb the surrounding beauty.
To truly immerse ourselves in its magic, we thoughtfully chose an Airbnb within Gamla Stan itself. This decision proved to be an absolute delight, granting us unparalleled access to the area. We reveled in the quiet serenity of early morning strolls before the bustling crowds arrived and enjoyed peaceful evening walks when the gas lamps cast a warm glow on the ancient buildings, transforming the district into an ethereal wonderland. This proximity allowed us to experience Gamla Stan’s many facets at different times of day, revealing its ever-changing character.

A Lifelong Fascination with Scandinavia
My connection to Scandinavia runs deep, a fascination that began in childhood. From an early age, I envisioned it as a magical realm, brimming with ancient folklore, thrilling adventures, and captivating stories. This allure only intensified as I grew older, developing a profound admiration for its distinctive cuisine, rich cultural traditions, and the elegant, minimalist design principles frequently showcased in Scandinavian furniture and interior aesthetics. The clean lines, functionality, and inherent beauty of their designs have always resonated deeply with me.

Returning to Stockholm with my family this time felt particularly special. My previous visit, years ago, was a whirlwind trip with friends during my time living in France. We explored Copenhagen and Stockholm in April, experiencing absolutely freezing temperatures, yet the sheer beauty of the cities was unforgettable. The delicious food and wonderful company from that trip created lasting memories, and I eagerly anticipated sharing these experiences, and creating new ones, with my loved ones. This recent adventure saw a larger family contingent: my husband, siblings, brother-in-law, nephews, and parents, making for a truly memorable group dynamic.
A Taste of Sweden: Restaurant CC and Beyond
Our culinary journey began on the first evening with a delightful dinner at Restaurant CC, a local gem where we savored classic Swedish fare. The highlight for many was the exquisite Swedish meatballs, served with their traditional creamy sauce and tart lingonberry preserves. My family, ever adventurous, also raved about the perfectly cooked elk and wild boar fillets, praising their unique flavors and tender textures. The meal concluded with a truly exceptional lingonberry mousse, a light and refreshing dessert that perfectly balanced the richness of the main courses. This initial meal set a high bar, as those meatballs were arguably among the finest I tasted throughout my entire trip – and I sampled many!

With satisfied appetites, a leisurely post-dinner stroll through the illuminated streets of Gamla Stan was the perfect way to conclude our first evening, helping us to walk off the delicious meal while soaking in the historic atmosphere.

The Quest for Swedish Baked Goods: Fabrique Bakery
The following morning brought a mission of paramount importance: to finally taste authentic Swedish cinnamon rolls and cardamom buns. During my previous visit to Sweden, I had regrettably missed out on these iconic pastries and had often chastised myself for not making the effort to seek them out. This time, they were firmly at the top of my itinerary, a non-negotiable culinary objective.
My research led me to Fabrique, a renowned bakery with rave reviews, and to my delight, a branch was conveniently located near our apartment. The moment we stepped inside, the air was thick with the most phenomenal aroma of freshly baked goods – a truly intoxicating scent of warm spices and sweet dough.

And let me confirm, their cinnamon rolls were nothing short of magical – a perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and soft dough. The cardamom buns were equally divine, offering a distinctive, aromatic warmth that truly captured the essence of Swedish baking. Beyond these specialties, we also sampled some truly amazing bread and flaky croissants. Frankly, everything we tried at Fabrique was outstanding, and I wholeheartedly recommend making a stop here for an unforgettable fika experience if you ever find yourself in Stockholm.
A Journey Through Time at the Vasa Museum
After indulging a little too generously in cinnamon rolls and other baked delights, we decided to embark on a cultural excursion to the renowned Vasa Museum, taking the opportunity to explore Stockholm’s beautiful neighboring waterways along the way. Our mode of transport to the museum was a boat, which provided a particularly scenic and memorable journey, offering unique perspectives of the city from the water.

You can actually spot the distinctive red building of the Vasa Museum in the images below, easily identifiable by the three towering ship masts dramatically protruding from its roof, hinting at the marvel contained within.

I genuinely cannot speak highly enough of the Vasa Museum; it is an absolute must-see for anyone visiting Stockholm. This extraordinary museum is entirely dedicated to the Vasa, a formidable warship that tragically sank in Stockholm’s harbor during its maiden voyage in 1628. What makes its story truly remarkable is its subsequent discovery, meticulous preservation, and eventual salvage some 333 years later in 1961.
At the time of its construction, the Vasa was envisioned as Sweden’s most powerful and beautifully adorned vessel, a symbol of national might. However, due to a critical design flaw, it capsized and sank almost immediately upon setting sail. The museum masterfully recounts this entire saga, from the ambitious vision behind its construction and the reasons for its demise, to the dramatic aftermath and the incredible feat of its discovery and preservation. Visitors can witness the ongoing conservation work firsthand, with specialists still actively salvaging and treating parts of the ship right within the museum – a truly fascinating glimpse into historical preservation. A compelling documentary further enhances the experience, illustrating the initial condition in which the ship was found, the complex process of its recovery, and the innovative techniques employed to preserve it. The sheer talent and dedication involved in saving this historical treasure are simply astounding.

I could continue extolling the virtues of this museum endlessly; it offers a profound journey into history, engineering, and human endeavor that captivated every member of our family.
The Quintessential Swedish Experience: A Smörgåsbord

Another absolute “must” on any visit to Sweden, in my opinion, is experiencing a traditional smörgåsbord. During my first trip to Stockholm, I was unfortunately unable to find an establishment serving this feast that was open, likely due to insufficient research on my part. Determined not to repeat that mistake, this time I meticulously planned ahead and secured a reservation.
We chose The Veranda restaurant, elegantly situated within the iconic Grand Hotel. Having read numerous reviews touting it as one of the finest smörgåsbords in the city, my excitement was palpable.
And let me assure you, it exceeded all expectations. The spread was truly magnificent, a veritable feast for the senses. My only personal disappointment was the inability to sample some of the exquisite cured meats and specific seafood dishes due to my pregnancy. However, despite these minor limitations, I still managed to enjoy a substantial and incredibly diverse selection, with the quality of every single item being absolutely top-notch.
The thoughtful inclusion of a menu guide was a brilliant touch, offering clear instructions on the traditional order of sampling dishes and suggesting perfect pairings of condiments and cheeses. The selection was staggering: no less than eight distinct types of salmon, ranging from smoked to cured, alongside eight variations of pickled herring – each a unique flavor profile. Beyond the seafood, there was an abundance of various meats, artisanal cheeses, fresh salads, seasonal vegetables, hearty soups, and an array of freshly baked breads. And then, the grand finale: an utterly amazing dessert table, groaning under the weight of sweet temptations.

Frankly, I have no idea how I found room for dessert, but somehow I did, and it was utterly delightful. As was becoming a pleasant trend on our trip, a much-needed post-dinner walk was in order to help digest our sumptuous meal. Stockholm truly comes alive at night, transforming into a city of enchanting lights and reflections that made me wish we could continue walking indefinitely, never returning to our apartment.

Embracing Exploration Amidst Challenges
The remainder of our time in Stockholm was characterized by spontaneous explorations and extensive walking. We literally walked everywhere, averaging an impressive ten miles a day. This was quite remarkable, especially considering I was experiencing severe morning sickness at the time. Despite the discomfort, I was determined to push through and embrace every opportunity to explore. While I typically capture many more photos, particularly of my family and myself, this trip saw fewer such moments. I believe my focus was intensely directed on simply putting one foot in front of the other, making detailed documentation less of a priority than usual.

Nevertheless, I made the absolute most of every moment. During one of our extensive explorations, an undeniable craving for Italian food struck. While I was hesitant to divert the family from the wonderful Swedish cuisine, the need for pizza in my life was simply too strong. Fortunately, my family was entirely on board – a testament, perhaps, to the shared Italian heritage within us! We stumbled upon a charming restaurant named Rodolfino, located just on the outskirts of Gamla Stan, and there we discovered the most incredible pizza and pasta. The food was so utterly delicious that we ended up returning for dinner two nights in a row!

The Perfect Impromptu Fika: A Sweet Farewell
As our time in Stockholm drew to a close, there was one Swedish tradition I had yet to experience: a “fika.” The word “fika” has gained considerable popularity in recent times, and for good reason. It embodies a cherished Swedish cultural practice – a moment to pause, enjoy a coffee or tea with delightful treats, and connect with friends or family. It’s not just a coffee break; it’s a social institution, and I was determined to partake in it during this trip. However, our fika turned out to be wonderfully impromptu. I hadn’t specifically planned to stop at Cafe Kronan, but feeling incredibly tired and in need of rest, we popped inside.
It was there that my eyes landed on the princess cake – that exquisite, beautiful green cake you see pictured below. This traditional Swedish confection typically features layers of delicate sponge cake, rich pastry cream, and airy whipped cream, all elegantly enrobed in a smooth layer of green marzipan. It truly is a dream of a cake. And I can confidently say that Cafe Kronan served the absolute best princess cake I tasted throughout my entire Swedish adventure.

Thus, our Stockholm journey concluded with the most perfect, unplanned fika, complete with delectable princess cakes, comforting cups of tea, and warm apple pie generously topped with cream. It was a serendipitous moment that encapsulated the very essence of fika – a delightful pause, especially appreciated when pregnant and in need of comfort. Stockholm truly offered an unforgettable blend of history, culture, and culinary delights.
While I initially considered sharing my Gotland photos within this post, it became clear that such an extensive inclusion would make the article far too long. Gotland, with its unique beauty and distinct character, undoubtedly deserves a dedicated feature of its own. Therefore, I will be sharing a separate post about our incredible trip to Gotland very soon – I don’t want to put it off any longer!
