Have you ever craved a dessert that’s both decadently rich and surprisingly wholesome? For a long time, the allure of a classic Black Forest cake—that harmonious blend of deep chocolate, luscious whipped cream, and tart cherries—held me captive. But as someone passionate about nourishing my body with clean, unprocessed ingredients, I knew a traditional version wouldn’t quite fit the bill. Simultaneously, my beloved Fudgy Paleo Brownies were constantly on my mind, sparking ideas for endless delicious variations.
The solution was clear: marry these two irresistible desires into one extraordinary treat. Thus, the Paleo Black Forest Brownies were born! This creation is pure magic: intensely fudgy brownies, bursting with sweet-tart cherries, crowned with a layer of velvety Paleo Fudgy Chocolate Avocado Frosting, and finished with a generous dollop of airy coconut whipped cream. The result is an indulgent dessert that truly delights the senses, made entirely from non-processed, real food ingredients.
These Black Forest Brownies don’t just satisfy a sweet tooth; they transport me back to cherished memories, particularly a memorable trip to Hamburg, Germany. Isn’t it wonderful how food possesses that incredible power to evoke vivid recollections and connect us to past adventures? For me, as a true food enthusiast, many of my most treasured travel memories are inextricably linked to the flavors, aromas, and culinary discoveries of the places I’ve visited. The simple act of biting into these brownies can unleash a cascade of nostalgia.
Just last year, while studying abroad in Lyon, France, my boyfriend was in Hamburg. I took a weekend trip to visit him, and I was genuinely astonished by the exceptional quality and diversity of the food scene there. It wasn’t just traditional German cuisine that impressed me; Hamburg offered an incredible array of international flavors. I savored the most authentic Chinese food I’d had outside of Asia, devoured a truly sublime Italian pizza, and experienced what was hands down the best steak of my life at a charming Portuguese steakhouse. Every meal was an adventure in itself, proving that great food truly transcends borders.
My boyfriend and I embarked on what could only be described as a glorious German pastry binge that weekend. We found ourselves constantly drawn to the tempting displays of sweets in grocery stores, quaint local bakeries, cozy coffee shops, and even a surprisingly well-stocked cafeteria within a department store! The sheer variety and exquisite craftsmanship of these pastries were almost overwhelming. It was a delightful challenge to resist buying every single pastry we laid eyes on, each one more inviting than the last.
As my Hamburg visit neared its end, I realized with a pang of regret that I hadn’t yet indulged in the quintessential German Black Forest cake (Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte). We promptly rectified this oversight, purchasing a slice from a small, inviting bakery. Our plan was to enjoy it outdoors on a scenic bench, but a wrong turn led us astray. We eventually found ourselves huddled in one of those small, covered bus stops, a far cry from our picturesque ideal. But in that moment, cramped as we were, with curious passersby casting amused glances our way, none of it mattered. That Black Forest cake was utterly phenomenal! Its rich chocolate, tart cherries, and delicate cream were a taste of pure bliss.
Our culinary adventures didn’t end there. As we navigated our way back to our accommodation, we serendipitously stumbled upon the most charming little pancake place nestled right by the water. We couldn’t resist. We ordered fresh pancakes, served with luscious homemade fruit coulis, enjoying them with the crisp morning air and a beautiful view. It was a truly perfect morning, a memory now intrinsically linked to the simple joy of good food and unexpected discoveries. And all these delightful moments, from the bustling markets to the quiet bus stop, were vividly rekindled by a single bite of these homemade Black Forest Brownies. Food truly is a powerful storyteller!
Now, let’s get back to the star of the show: these incredible Paleo Black Forest Brownies. Achieving their stunning layered presentation requires a little patience, primarily allowing them to cool completely. Given their exceptionally fudgy texture, I highly recommend placing the entire pan in the refrigerator for at least an hour or two. This firming-up period is crucial; it makes them much easier to cut into clean, elegant squares, ready for their delicious adornments. This small step ensures that each brownie maintains its perfect shape and integrity for layering.
Next, I prepared a batch of my renowned Paleo Fudgy Chocolate Avocado Frosting. This frosting is a game-changer, offering a rich chocolate flavor and creamy texture without any dairy or refined sugars, leveraging the healthy fats of avocado. For the whipped cream, I finally perfected the art of making flawless coconut whipped cream. The absolute key is to place your can of full-fat coconut cream (not milk!) in the refrigerator for several hours, or even overnight. This allows the solid cream to separate from the liquid. Scoop out only the thick, hardened cream and whip it with a mixer. It whips up beautifully this way and, even better, maintains its delightful fluffiness for days. I’ve often kept leftover whipped cream in an airtight container in the fridge, enjoying it on various desserts throughout the week.
For the ultimate experience, I meticulously prepared each brownie piece individually. Each perfectly cut square was first generously layered with the rich, dairy-free Paleo Fudgy Chocolate Avocado Frosting. Then, a delicate dollop of the freshly whipped coconut cream was added, creating a cloud-like topping. The grand finale was a single, vibrant cherry placed atop each masterpiece. Imagine: dense, chocolatey brownie, sumptuously fudgy frosting, and light, airy whipped cream, all infused with the bright notes of cherry. It’s an undeniable symphony of flavors and textures—truly a delicious and indulgent creation! This dessert quickly became a daily highlight for me; bringing a small container to work meant a little moment of joy every single day. The best part? Knowing that these exquisite treats were crafted from only the finest unprocessed ingredients—no flour, no butter, no artificial chemicals—made them the ultimate guilt-free paleo delight.

Instructions
-
Place a can of coconut cream in the refrigerator; it should chill for at least 2 hours, or ideally overnight, for best results.
-
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175°C).
-
Lightly grease an 8×8 inch (20×20 cm) baking pan with coconut oil to prevent sticking.
-
Melt the coconut oil, then add ¼ cup of chocolate chips to the melted oil.
-
Place the bowl containing the coconut oil and chocolate chips over a pan of gently simmering hot water (creating a double boiler). Stir continuously until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth, then remove from heat. Whisk the chocolate and coconut oil together until thoroughly combined.
-
In a large mixing bowl (Bowl #1), combine the mashed avocado with the melted chocolate and coconut oil mixture. Whisk them together until smooth. Add the eggs, maple syrup, honey, and vanilla extract to this bowl and whisk vigorously until the mixture thickens slightly and all ingredients are uniformly incorporated.
-
In a separate medium bowl (Bowl #2), thoroughly mix together the almond flour, coconut flour, salt, unsweetened cocoa powder, and cinnamon.
-
Gradually pour the dry ingredients from Bowl #2 into the wet chocolate mixture in Bowl #1. Mix gently with a fork or whisk until the ingredients are just combined, being careful not to overmix.
-
Gently fold in the remaining ¼ cup of chocolate chips and the 1 ½ cups of chopped cherries into the brownie batter.
-
Pour the batter into the prepared 8×8 inch pan and bake for 35 minutes. The center will still appear slightly wet or moist; this is normal for fudgy brownies.
-
Allow the brownies to cool completely at room temperature, then transfer the pan to the refrigerator to chill for approximately 60 minutes. This step is crucial for achieving a firm, fudgy texture and clean cuts.
-
While the brownies are chilling, retrieve the cooled can of coconut cream from the refrigerator. Carefully scoop out the thick, solid coconut cream that has risen to the top, leaving any clear liquid behind.
-
Place the solid coconut cream, 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of maple syrup, and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract into a clean mixing bowl. Whip with an electric mixer on high speed until the mixture becomes light, fluffy, and resembles traditional whipped cream. If the cream isn’t thickening enough, try placing the bowl in the freezer for 10 minutes, then whip again. Store the finished whipped cream in the fridge until ready to use.
-
For an extra layer of rich, fudgy chocolate, prepare a batch of Paleo Fudgy Chocolate Avocado Frosting. The link to this amazing recipe is included in the blog post above!
-
Once the brownies are thoroughly chilled and firm, you have two options for assembly: you can either spread the frosting and whipped cream over the entire pan of brownies and then cut, OR individually prepare each piece after cutting (which is my preferred method for an elegant presentation).
-
To individually prepare, cut the brownies into desired squares. On top of each brownie piece, spread a layer of the Paleo Fudgy Chocolate Avocado Frosting. Then, add a generous dollop of the homemade coconut whipped cream. Finally, crown each delightful brownie with a fresh cherry for that perfect Black Forest touch.
