A minimalist display of ingredients: pure apple juice and a medley of fresh berries.
  • Apple Juice: The foundation of these delectable popsicles! It’s crucial to select an apple juice that is 100% pure juice with no added sugars or artificial ingredients. Look for labels that clearly state “no sugar added” to ensure you’re getting only the natural sweetness of apples. Organic options are often a good choice for purity. If you have a juicer, you can even juice your own fresh apples for the freshest, most vibrant flavor possible, making these truly farm-to-freezer treats.
  • Fresh Berries: These add beautiful color, delightful texture, and an extra boost of vitamins to your popsicles. You have complete freedom to use your favorite fruits! Mixed berries like strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries work wonderfully, offering a medley of tastes and a gorgeous visual appeal. Other fantastic options include sliced kiwi, diced mango, or even small chunks of peaches. The more variety, the more exciting your popsicles will be!

Easy Step-by-Step Guide to Making Fruit Popsicles

Making your own healthy apple juice popsicles is incredibly simple and fun. Follow these straightforward steps to create a batch of refreshing treats:

Popsicle molds being filled with an assortment of fresh berries.
Step 1: Carefully arrange fresh berries into each popsicle mold.

Step 1: Prepare Your Berries and Molds. Begin by thoroughly washing your chosen fresh berries. If using larger fruits like strawberries, slice them into smaller, bite-sized pieces that will fit nicely into your popsicle molds. For a visually appealing effect, you can gently press some of the sliced berries against the inside edges of the molds before filling the rest. This creates a beautiful pattern once the popsicles are frozen. Distribute the berries evenly among all your popsicle molds. (For a batch of six popsicles, I typically use about 6 blackberries, 18 blueberries, 12 raspberries, and 5 sliced strawberries, adjusting based on mold size and berry preference.)

Apple juice being poured carefully into berry-filled popsicle molds.
Step 2: Gently pour apple juice over the berries until molds are full.

Step 2: Add the Apple Juice. Once the berries are in place, carefully pour the 100% pure apple juice into each popsicle mold. Fill them almost to the very top, leaving just a tiny bit of space for expansion as the liquid freezes. For my six molds, approximately 1 1/4 cups of apple juice were perfectly sufficient to fill them adequately without overflow.

Popsicle sticks or lids being placed onto the filled popsicle molds.
Step 3: Securely place the popsicle sticks or lids onto the molds.

Step 3: Insert Sticks and Secure Molds. If your popsicle molds come with reusable sticks, insert them carefully into the center of each mold, ensuring they stand upright. If your molds have lids with built-in stick holders, place these tops firmly in position. Make sure everything is sealed properly to prevent spills in your freezer.

Step 4: Freeze the popsicles until completely solid.

Step 4: Freeze Until Solid. Carefully transfer your filled popsicle molds to the freezer. Allow them to freeze for at least 4 hours, or ideally overnight, to ensure they are completely solid and hold their shape perfectly. The freezing time can vary depending on the size of your molds and the temperature of your freezer. Once frozen, they are ready to be enjoyed!

Frequently Asked Questions About Homemade Popsicles

Here are some common questions and helpful answers regarding these simple yet delicious apple juice popsicles:

What kind of molds are best for making popsicles?

I personally recommend using BPA-free silicone or plastic popsicle molds, as they are durable and make it easy to remove the frozen treats. Silicone molds are particularly flexible, allowing you to pop out the popsicles with minimal effort. The Lebice BPA-free popsicle molds are a great option, and similar molds are widely available. Look for molds that come with reusable sticks or a drip guard for mess-free enjoyment.

How long does it typically take for apple juice popsicles to freeze solid?

The freezing time can vary depending on several factors, including the size of your molds, the initial temperature of your ingredients, and the efficiency of your freezer. Generally, these apple juice popsicles will be fully frozen and ready to enjoy within 4 to 6 hours. For best results, I often recommend freezing them overnight to ensure they are completely solid and don’t melt too quickly once removed from the mold.

What’s the best way to store homemade popsicles?

Once your popsicles are completely frozen, you can remove them from their molds and store them in an airtight freezer bag or container. This prevents freezer burn and keeps them fresh. Properly stored, these homemade apple juice popsicles can be kept in the freezer for up to 6 months. Just grab one whenever a craving for a healthy, refreshing treat strikes!

Can I use frozen berries instead of fresh ones?

Absolutely! Frozen berries work just as well, especially if fresh ones aren’t in season or readily available. For the best texture and to prevent large ice chunks, I recommend letting frozen berries thaw slightly before adding them to the molds. This makes them easier to arrange and ensures they blend more smoothly with the apple juice as it freezes.

Are there other fruit combinations that would work well?

Yes, this recipe is incredibly versatile! Beyond mixed berries, consider adding thin slices of kiwi, small cubes of ripe mango, halved grapes, or even segments of citrus like oranges or mandarins. You can also experiment with a combination of different fruits for unique flavor profiles and beautiful color contrasts.

How do I easily remove the popsicles from their molds?

If you’re struggling to get a frozen popsicle out of its mold, simply run the outside of the mold under warm water for about 10-20 seconds. This will gently loosen the popsicle from the sides, allowing it to slide out easily. Avoid twisting or pulling too forcefully, as this can break the stick or the popsicle itself.

Can I make these popsicles creamy?

For a creamier texture, you can substitute a portion of the apple juice with a splash of full-fat coconut milk (for a dairy-free option) or plain Greek yogurt. This will give your popsicles a richer, more indulgent feel while still keeping them healthy. Adjust the ratio to your preference, starting with a 3:1 juice to creamy ingredient ratio.

Apple Juice and Berry Popsicles {Paleo, GF} | Perchance to Cook, www.perchancetocook.com
An easy, healthy homemade popsicle recipe made with 100% pure apple juice and a medley of fresh berries of your choice. Perfect for a refreshing summer treat!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cup apple juice, (all natural, 100% juice, no sugar added; store-bought or freshly juiced)
  • mixed berries, (fresh or slightly thawed frozen berries; enough to fill each popsicle mold)

Instructions

  1. Wash and slice strawberries into smaller pieces. Fill each popsicle mold with your choice of mixed berries. For an attractive presentation, you can gently press a few sliced strawberry pieces against the inside edges of the popsicle molds. (As a guide, I used about 6 blackberries, 18 blueberries, 12 raspberries, and 5 strawberries to fill six standard popsicle molds.)
  2. Carefully pour the apple juice into the popsicle molds, filling them almost to the top, ensuring the berries are submerged. For my molds, 1 1/4 cups of apple juice was the ideal amount. Place the tops or popsicle sticks into each mold.
  3. Transfer the molds to the freezer and freeze for a minimum of 4 hours, or until completely solid. For best results and firm popsicles, freezing overnight is recommended.

Notes

For these apple juice and berry popsicles, I used these Lebice BPA-free popsicle molds. These molds are a similar, excellent alternative for creating perfect homemade popsicles.
